In August of 2011, USAID commissioned a study of population attitudes toward outside investors in Talas. The research aimed to understand the drivers of recent conflicts with mining projects in the area. Oxus International conducted a series of structured interviews, focus groups and surveys across three villages near mining sites. The research demonstrated significant suspicion of the mining projects, driven by ecological concerns. Oxus International is now engaging with several interested parties, including mining firms, NGOs and business groups to determine how these survey finding could be used in social engagement and education strategies. We are also assessing future research needs both in Talas and elsewhere in the country related to the extractive industries.
