Oxus International was hired by an international consulting firm to monitor Kyrgyz-language print, broadcast and online news sources for mentions of specific topics. Because online news media is still a young industry in Kyrgyzstan, Oxus International was required to physically collect Kyrgyz-language newspapers and search for articles related to a provided list of topics that the client was interested in. Despite the additional difficulty of attempting to track newspapers’ sometimes erratic publishing schedule to manually collect and search for relevant articles, this project allowed us to more thoroughly track trends in how the topics were being reported and compare it to English and Russian-language media sources. While it is one thing to monitor media sources to learn updates of a specific story, Oxus International believes there is much more that can be gleaned from not just what is reported, but how. Monitoring local Kyrgyz-language television stations also proved worthwhile, as television is the most popular medium for the population of Kyrgyzstan to receive information, meaning that any message would reach a much wider audience than through print or online sources alone.
